Origin of Some Knoxville Lewises PDF Print E-mail

Some sleuthing has paid off!

Mary Lewis Evans' obituary in the Knoxville paper said she was born in "Eleanavow." After confirming with Welsh-speaking researchers, I determined the location was actually Blaenafon, Monmouthshire.

The death certificate for Susannah Lewis Richards, Mary's sister, has their parents' names as David Lewis and Johann [sic] Prosser.

With those bits of information, I contacted the Gwent Family History Society's Pontypool Branch. Nicola Thomas wrote back with fantastic details.

According to Gwent FHS Monmouthshire marriage index 1813-37 David Lewis of Llanover married Joan Prosser of Llanover on 18 Sept 1824 at Llanover Church.

Our Pontypool branch has transcribed the records for Bethlehem Congregational chapel Blaenafon. From that

  • Mary was baptised 22 June 1828 dau of David and Joan Lewis of Llanover Blaenafon. She was born 1 June 1828.
  • Susannah was baptised 31 March 1831 born 12 Mar 1831.
  • Thomas was baptised 22 Jan 1826 born 30 Dec 1825

In all cases David gives his occupation as miner.

Thank you, Gwent FHS!
