St. Bridget's Church - Parish Records PDF Print E-mail

Anglican church records are essentially of two types: records of parishoners' events, such as christening/baptism, marriage, and burial; and records of church activities.

Historically, the parish's governing body -- the Vestry -- also administered certain village functions, such as support for the poor. For this reason, all church minutes, records of the Parish Chest, and daybooks or journals maintained by vicars should be consulted.

The Parish Registers of the Church of St. Bridget contain records for the following events and dates:

  • Baptism -- 1717-present
  • Marriage -- 1724-present
  • Burial -- 1717-present

Retired volumes of St. Bridget's Parish Registers have been deposited with the Glamorgan Record Office Archives in Cardiff.  The public may view photocopied facsimiles of the registers there.  Dates covered by Parish Registers held at the Glamorgan Record Office Archives are as follows:

  • Baptism -- 1747-1991
  • Marriage -- 1754-1835, 1837-1970
  • Burial -- 1747-1991

The Glamorgan Family History Society has indexed the Parish Registers for the following periods:

  • Baptism -- 1717-1901
  • Marriage -- 1724-1837
  • Burial -- 1717-1902

The GFHS index was published in both hardcopy and microfiche formats.  Contact GFHS for ordering details.  The microfiche version is available through branch centres of the LDS Family History Library.

Original Bishop's Transcripts (reports of entries in the Parish Registers sent annually to the Bishop at Llandaff) for the period 1717-1870 are held by the Department of Manuscripts and Records, National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth.  The Bishop's Transcripts contain christenings, marriages and burials for 1717 and 1724-1837, and christenings and burials from 1837-1870.

The Glamorgan Record Office has some Bishop's Transcripts, as follows:  1717, 1724-1751, 1753-1760, 1762-1800, 1804-1821, 1823-1837.  St. Bridget's Church Bishop's Transcripts are also available on microfilm worldwide at branch libraries of the LDS Family History Library, accession number 104912 (Item 2).  They have been incorporated into the LDS International Genealogical Index, which makes them searchable via CD-ROM and on-line databases.
