What I'm Reading PDF Print E-mail

I am currently reading the 2004 English translation of R. Tudor Jones' seminal work, Hanes Annibynwyr Cymru. The English version, Congregationalism in Wales, was masterfully edited by Robert Pope.

This book is filled with rich details of many facets of history: world religion, Britain, Wales, and -- of course -- the Independent churches and those who brought the movement to life.

As a genealogist, for years I have grumbled about my "misfortune" in having ancestors who were Welsh Independents.  After all, the Anglican parish churches are the ones that kept "good" records.  After reading just the first few pages of this book, however, I am proud of the deep religious convictions and dedication that must have filled my ancestors.  That spirit must have been one of the catalysts for their emigration and subsequent success in America.

Despite having studied Welsh history for nearly 30 years, I have already learned a tremendous amount, and I'm only into the third chapter!

Watch for a review on this site when I'm done!

In the meantime, check the book out on Amazon (link at left). I highly recommend it for those with an interest in Welsh Independents.
